What’s at Stake

Thomas Edison claimed to have failed over 10,000 times while trying to invent electricity. How was he able to stay so committed to achieving his desired goal after failing so much? Thomas Edison knew what was at stake. He knew that his legacy as one of the greatest inventors of all time depended on him inventing electricity.

Thomas Edison said, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up. If I find 10,000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is often a step forward.” He believed that every failure he experienced was only getting him closer to finding the solution to his problem. How many people would’ve quit when facing the same adversity as he faced?

It is almost impossible to achieve something extraordinary without experiencing some kind of setback or temporary defeat. One of my idols Napoleon Hill said, “No man ever achieved worthwhile success who did not, at one time or another, find himself with at least one foot hanging well over the brink of failure. One of the most common causes of failure is the habit of quitting when one is overtaken by temporary defeat.”

I can’t tell you how many times I have found myself on the brink of failure, only to succeed? It is one of life’s most rewarding feelings to know that you’ve succeeded when you were so close to failing. Have you found yourself in that position before? What kept you from throwing in the towel? I guarantee that you had too much to lose to quit.

Fear of Loss Or Hope For Gain?

When you set out to achieve something extraordinary, you must consider what’s at stake for you. What have you got to lose if you don’t make it? What do you have to gain when you achieve your desired goal? The more reasons why you have to achieve your desired goal, the more motivation and determination you will have to achieve your desired goal. The more reasons why you have behind your cause, the more committed you will stay when things don’t go your way.

Trust me, there will come a time when you are cruising down easy street on your way to achieving your goal and something is going to knock you so hard on your ass that you might not even know what hit you. When you are facing that painful feeling of failure, your judgement is not where it needs to be. That’s when that devilish little voice in your head is going to try to persuade you to quit. Lets face it, quitting is usually the easy thing to do. Everyone is doing it, its okay if you quit, right? Wrong, I’ve quit before and it sucks. There are still skeletons in my closet from throwing in the towel when I should’ve soldiered on. I can’t take that back, and neither can you. Do you have some quitting skeletons in your closet? We can’t change the past but we are in total control of our future. Its entirely up to us to make sure we never make the same mistake again. The best way to do that is to totally understand what’s at stake. Understand what you have to lose. Understand what you have to gain. Understand that you can achieve anything you believe.

Next Time I Will Persevere

The next time you find yourself on the brink of failure, its okay. Failure is a part of the journey. Failure is a chance to begin again more intelligently. Failure is just an outcome, that’s all it is, its just an outcome. Take a deep breath and focus on all the reasons why you have to keep on keeping on. Focus on everything you have to gain. Focus on everything you have to lose. The more reasons you have, the more empowered you will be. Anyone can quit when the going gets tough. It takes a real winner to persevere in the face of adversity. If I can do it, then so can you. Winners never quit and quitters never win.

Consistent Performances Equal Consistent Success

The Greatest Achievers Were all Consistent Performers

The Greatest achievers of all time were also the most consistent performers of all time. What good is getting great results if you are only getting them once in a while? Pat Riley the famous basketball coach said, “You don’t want to have an excellent game, you want to have game excellence.” The difference with the best performers and average performers is that the best performers achieve the results that they desire on a consistent basis, while the average performers only achieve the results that they desire once in a while. If you want to succeed at anything that you do, you must consistently achieve the results that you desire.

Consistent Performances Require Consistent Practice

The most consistent performers of all time were the people who were the hardest working individuals in their respective fields. Thomas Edison had a work ethic that was second to none. In fact he used to say that work was better than whiskey. Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer ever because he is the greatest at practicing his game. Champions are made at practice and not during “Show Time”. “Show Time” is just an opportunity to display how hard you have been working during your practice time. The same principles of practice apply to everything you do in your life. If you want to consistently succeed at anything you do, you must be willing to practice harder than everyone else in your field. Those individuals who practice harder than everyone else will always be more successful than everyone else.

Perfect Practice Equals Perfect Performance

Practice alone will not get you the success that you desire. You must commit to constant and never ending improvement in your life. Even if it is just a little improvement, as long as you are consistently getting better you will consistently experience successful results. You must always strive to get better by the day if you want to become a peak performer. If you are not moving forward in life, you are moving backwards and that is unacceptable. Achieve the success that you desire by committing to constant and never ending improvement. You must work on your weaknesses until they are equal to your strengths. You must consistently ask yourself empowering questions like, “What can I do today to make me consistently achieve the results that I desire?” “What can I do today to make me consistently perform better by the day?” Getting better by the day is what I call “perfect practice” and “perfect practice” will lead you to perfect performances.

You can Achieve Anything you Desire

You can achieve anything you believe with power and control over your thoughts and actions. You are the master of your future but it is entirely up to you to make your dreams come true. Don’t let someone work harder than you. Don’t let someone achieve the results that you desire while you sit back like a spectator. Life is not a spectator sport. Life happens when you make life happen. Make your life happen by consistently achieving the results that you desire by committing to constant and never ending improvement. Remember that perfect practice leads to consistent performances and consistent performances equal consistent success.

Take Your Idea From a Thought to a Profit

A Groundbreaking Idea Worth Billions

Have you ever had an idea for something new and innovative that you knew without a doubt that it was guaranteed to be a success? You visualized this idea in your head over a million times to the point where you knew everything there was to know about it forward and backwards? You even kept it a secret from everyone because you didn’t want anyone to steal your idea. You were just about to put your plan into action for your incredible idea and then suddenly you realize that someone beat you to the finish line? Has this ever happened to you? Don’t feel bad because I can assure you that this has happened to people all over the world countless times. I can also assure you that many of these ideas that people failed to take action on eventually ended up changing the world, making their owners millions, if not billions. Do you have a story like this where you should’ve, could’ve, would’ve?

What was the Difference Between you and Them?

Why was someone able to pull it off and not you? I can tell you why, that someone took the necessary actions to manifest their idea while you just sat around and let the idea occupy space in your head. Taking action is the foundational key to achieving any success. You can’t achieve any kind of success unless you take massive action towards its manifestation.

What are you Afraid of?

Walt Disney said, “All of your dreams can come true if you have the courage to pursue them.” What do you think some of the reasons were that prevented people from taking action on some of these awesome ideas? Its usually fear of failure. Most people don’t believe in their abilities to achieve extraordinary outcomes so they won’t even give it a try. If you are going to go through life and not even try to make your dreams come true then there really is no sense for you to live because what you are doing is just existing.

The greatest risk is the one that you don’t take. Nothing is more expensive than a missed opportunity. As I like to tell my clients, “Opportunity doesn’t go away, it just goes to someone else. Ask any successful businessperson and they will tell you, the secret to success in life is to be ready for opportunities when they present themselves. They will also tell you that opportunities usually come disguised in the shape of hard work and difficulty. So if they don’t appear to be on a silver platter, don’t get discouraged. You must have vision, determination, and a burning desire to succeed no matter what happens along the way. You must be committed to achieving the results that you desire no matter how many times you fail. You must stay flexible in your approach to achieving. If you don’t get the results that you desire, you must change your approach until you succeed.

Fear of criticism holds back many others who are terrified what others might think of their idea. They are usually terrified what their friends or family might think of them.

Great ideas often receive criticism and incredible opposition from mediocre minds. When Walt Disney was developing Disneyland, most of the people he talked to thought that it would be a financial disaster which would be closed and forgotten within a year. Imagine if Walt Disney would have listened to those dream stealers, he would have never blessed the world with the amazing multi billion dollar brand known as Disney. Remember, it is not what others believe you can achieve, it only matters what you believe you can achieve.

The Greater the Idea, the More Difficult it Will be to Achieve Success.

When Thomas Edison was attempting to invent electricity, he was competing against some of the sharpest inventing minds in the world. It was a race to invent electricity, an invention that would change the world. Can you imagine the difficulties that these inventors were facing? They were guaranteed to meet failure along the way. Thomas Edison tested over 3,000 filaments before he came up with his version of a practical light bulb. Can you imagine how many people would have quit after trying 500 different kinds of filaments with no success? How many people would have quit after 2,000 different failures? No one would have said that they didn’t give it a valiant effort. However, Thomas Edison was a different kind of achiever. He would never quit until he achieved the results that he desired, no matter how many failures he experienced. Thomas Edison said, “Results? Why, man, I have gotten lots of results! If I find 10,000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is often a step forward.” Thomas Edison believed that many of life’s failures were experienced by people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.

You can Achieve Anything you Desire.

If you are trying to achieve something in life, you must stay committed to your desired outcomes. You must believe in your abilities to achieve the results that you desire. Failure should not be an option for you. Success must be your only option. You must keep on keeping on until you succeed. No one has ever achieved greatness without experiencing failure. It is a part of the success process. Everyone is created equal. What separates the achievers from the nonbelievers is the quality of their hearts and minds. You can achieve anything you desire if you believe in your abilities to achieve. You are what you think. With your thoughts you design your world. The question is, are you going to design your dream life, or are you going to design a life of mediocrity? It all depends on which one you want for yourself. I want an extraordinary life and I know you do too. Get infected with passion, because nothing extraordinary in the world has been accomplished without passion. Go after it with the fierce urgency of now. Don’t say you will do it one day, achieve it today. Don’t wait to be great, be great now. I know you can. Do you believe you can?
