Farrah Fawcett is an Inspiration to Those Battling Cancer
Tuesday, May 19th, 2009Farrah Fawcett has been an American icon since 1976 when her famous poster of her wearing a red swimsuit went on to sell over 12 million copies. That is a sales record that is still unrivaled today. Farrah and her world famous “Farrah hair” became an international hair trend, inspiring millions of women all over the world to emulate her incredible hair style. Farrah Fawcett went on to have a very successful career appearing in several movies, plays, and television shows over the last 30 years. In 2007, GQ Magazine named that famous poster the most influential piece of men’s art of the last 50 years.
Just like every guy who ever laid eyes on that poster, it was love at first sight with Farrah Fawcett for me. I don’t know if it was that magical hair, or her mesmerizing smile. Whatever it was about Farrah Fawcett had me in a trance. To me, she was one of the most beautiful ladies I had ever seen.
When I found out that Farrah had been diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006, I was saddened just like her millions of other fans. In fact, whenever I hear of anyone who is diagnosed with cancer it really touches me because I have lost a few friends to cancer over the years. I have been around various charities like “Kids Beating Cancer” and “The Make a Wish Foundation”. Cancer is an illness that can strike anyone. It affects people from all walks of life. Cancer doesn’t care what your race is, cancer doesn’t care how old you are, or how much money you have or don’t have. I just found out that there is a 10 year old girl who is battling breast cancer. Kids that are 10 years old are not supposed to get breast cancer. If that doesn’t show you that cancer can strike anyone, I don’t know what will. I think we all know someone who has battled this devastating illness. Some people win the battle against cancer, while countless others lose their lives to cancer.
Last Friday I witness a special on NBC called “Farrah’s Story” chronicling her battle with her cancer. Over 9 million people viewed this documentary showing Farrah’s battle with cancer. I am sure it moved everyone the same way it moved me. It showed her facing her illness with incredible resolve and incredible resiliency. Farrah and her friend Alana Stewart documented her battle against cancer over the last three years, giving an inside look to what her battle with cancer has been like. It showed her incredible desire to live. Farrah has exceeded her life expectancy that her doctors had originally given her. I think her miracle of life has been because of her positive attitude and her strong desire to live. I don’t want to give you too many details of Farrah’s Story because I recommend that you see it for yourself. Be prepared to cry because I had tears several times throughout the two hour special and when I wasn’t crying, I was fighting to hold the tears in. It made me fall in love with her all over again. This documentary has to be so inspiring to those who are battling cancer and even for those who are battling issues in their lives. It is not the length of your life that matters, it is the way you live it.
Many people are battling various issues today that may seem like the end of the world is around the corner. Some people are losing their homes, some people are losing there jobs, while others have lost money to bad investments. What if you were losing your life? What if you were only given a few months to live? How would you act then? Would you care about your car? Would you care about your career? I don’t think so….. If you are among the lucky people of the world who are in good health, be grateful. If you have your health, you can achieve anything you desire. If you have your health, you can accomplish greatness in whatever you choose to do. I know there are some difficult times out there for many people, but how difficult would life be if you had cancer? All the money in the world couldn’t help you. Next time you catch yourself being negative, stop what you are doing and look at the positives in your life. Look at how lucky you are to be healthy. Think about how fortunate you are to be facing the difficulties that you have. Don’t let negative thoughts enter your head. They are terrible for you and your health. Think of all the amazing things that you have going for you. Think about the promise and possibilities that your future holds.
Please watch “Farrah’s Story” for yourself so you can be thankful for the health that you have in your life. Go to her website at http://www.farrahfawcett.us to buy her famous poster. The proceeds go to help fund the fight against cancer. Volunteer at a cancer charity because you can make a difference in the battle that others are facing against cancer. I dedicate this to all those people who are battling cancer, to all those people who have defeated their cancer, and to those who have lost their lives to cancer. May you have peace, love, and happiness.
