Effective Leadership
Effective leadership and quality communication with the individuals that you work with will either make or break you. This applies to you whether you are a sales team, a creative team of designers, a sports team, co-workers, or a family. If you are not leading the team properly or effectively communicating, you are destined to fail. Follow these steps and you will learn to lead like the greatest leaders of all time. Memorize these 10 steps until you know them by heart.
Remember that by the time that someone gets to you, they have their own attitudes, habits, behaviors, and skills. It is up to the effective leader to change them into the successful individuals that you desire them to be. However, you must only desire the best for them so they can improve their lives, in return improving yours. You must always understand that if you take care of them, they will take care of you.
10 Steps to Effective Leadership
1. You earn respect by giving respect. The key to successful leadership is influence not authority. Don’t criticize, abuse, embarrass, or complain about your team. Point out their mistakes indirectly. Tell them about some of the mistakes you have made in the past. Talk about what you did to overcame them. If you lose someone’s confidence or respect, it may be difficult to get back.
2. Make sure everyone knows exactly what their roles are. Know exactly what you want each individual to do. General Eisenhower said, “Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do what you want done because they want to do it.” Get your team excited to do what you want them to do. The best way to get someone to do something is to get them to want to do it. Effective leaders have been known to have the ability to get people doing what they don’t like doing, as they enjoy doing it.
3. Human beings starve for appreciation. Make each person feel important so you will create loyalty. Acknowledge even the smallest improvements and every time there is an improvement. Know the people on your team well so you know how to inspire them. Every individual is different so what may inspire one, will not inspire the other. Always be sincere with your team. Praise and appreciation may easily have a profound effect on an individual’s entire life.
4. Set their expectations high. Let them know what you expect from them while you encourage them to expect even more from themselves. Tell them on a regular basis that you believe in them and that you have faith in their abilities to achieve.
5. You can develop success from failures. Perfection takes time to achieve. Great leaders shows average achievers to achieve like superior achievers. Work with those individuals that are struggling because training them to be better is easier than starting all over with someone new. Have someone who is achieving mentor them until they are achieving similar results. Great leaders inspire individuals who are performing poorly to do better and help those who are doing great to do even greater.
6. Challenge them daily to achieve more. Inspire them to stretch their abilities to achieve results beyond their current capabilities. Set performance incentives and bonuses.
7. Lead them by example. Great leaders have followers. Lead them instead of pushing them.
8. Great leaders are masters of communication. See things from every individual’s point of view. Be a great listener. Get your team comfortable with talking and voicing their opinion, ideas, and concerns. If their is a problem, you want to immediately take care of it instead of letting the problem get bigger. Never forget to admit to your own mistakes. Never promise anything you can’t deliver.
9. Create a fun and enjoyable but extremely serious workplace. Tell them that when it is work time, it is “SHOW TIME”. You know what they say about “SHOW TIME”, and that is that the show must always go on. Set up after work fun time like parties, gatherings, and picnics. Let them know that this is a serious business and they can enjoy their work but this is also the way they make their living so they must always be serious.
10. Show them your reputation of a person with fine integrity. Give them an awesome reputation to emulate.
