Selling Skills Part 1. Discovering Your Clients Needs

Monday, June 29th, 2009

The Sales Profession Has Changed the Lives of Millions of People Worldwide

Being a master of the sales process has been invaluable to me over my lifetime. My ability as a master sales professional has truly changed my life. Once you understand the sales process, you can sell any product or services in the world. I also believe that every human being on this planet is involved in sales, one way or another. Unfortunately, most people have no clue of what they are doing in sales. I would say that 80% of the people in the world who are in sales couldn’t sell a get out of jail free card to a prisoner on death row. These are the same individuals that think they will be great at sales if they talk your ear off. Talking a lot doesn’t make you a master sales professional. It only makes you a master of being a pain in the butt.

Selling Skills

I am going to start a new series called “Selling Skills”. I truly believe that everyone will benefit from this series whether they are in sales or not because selling skills are essential to our day to day lives. Whether we are selling a product or a service, or selling ourselves to an employer, or if we are selling our children the benefits of a proper education, we are all sales people. However, there is a big difference between a sales person and a sales professional. When you are done with this series, you will have the same skills as a sales professional.

Born Salesmen

We have all heard someone say, “He or she is a born salesmen.” There is no such thing as a born salesmen. Sales professionals are made, they are not born. You will become a sales professional by studying the sales process and then applying what you’ve learned to real life situations.

Selling Skills Part 1 “Discovering Your Clients Needs”

Most sales people will make the critical mistake of not discovering the needs of their clients. I know you might be thinking, “Who would be so stupid to not find out what their clients needs are?” However, you would be surprised how common this mistake is. Most sales people will not take the time to get to know their clients by asking the proper discovery questions to find out what their clients needs are. Instead they will present the product or service that they think are the best for their clients because it happens to be their favorite one or they might present the product or service that has worked for their previous clients in the past. Or the worst is when a sales person will push a client towards a product or service because it has a special bonus on it. Every clients needs are different, if you don’t realize this you will not be successful in sales.

The biggest mistake you can in sales is not finding out your clients needs because it shows your prospective clients the following:

1. This person doesn’t care about me.

2. This person doesn’t care about my needs.

3. This person only wants to sell me something.

If your clients are feeling any of these two reasons you will be unsuccessful. You will be telling instead of selling.

The Discovery of Your Clients Needs are Critical to Your Sales Presentation

The most important part of the sales process is your discovery questions. This is the beginning of your sales presentation where you will ask your clients the necessary questions to find out what they needs are. Ask questions like:

1. What are they trying to accomplish with their new product or services?

2. How would they use your product or services?

3. What product or services have they been using?

4. What did they like the best about their previous product or service?

5. What did they like the least about their previous product or service?

6. If they could design the perfect product or service, how would they do it? What options or features would it have?

7. What is wrong with the product or services that they are using now?

8. What is the most important factor of their decision to select a new product or service?

These are some sample questions that you might ask during the discovery of your sales presentation. Remember, your questions are going to be different depending on the product or services that you are selling. You are doing the presentation for your clients, not yourself. By asking these discovery questions. Your clients are going to tell you exactly how to sell them. However, you don’t want to start selling them during the discovery process because it is just a fact finding time. Don’t start selling after each question you ask them because they will stop telling you this valuable information. If they see that you are using their answers against them, they won’t answer you with the truth. Buyers are liars. (Sometimes) Make notes in your head or on your presentation materials so you don’t forget what they told you. Once you have this information you will design your presentation around the needs of your clients as you show them how your product or service will solve all their problems. As a sales professional, you are looking to find a need so you can solve the problem for them. Sales professionals are professional problem solvers. The sales process isn’t a wrestling move, it is not something you do to your clients. It is something that you do for THEM. I repeat, the sales process is for your clients benefit and not yours.

Dale Carnegie said, “THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE SOMEONE DO SOMETHING IS BY GETTING THEM TO WANT TO DO IT.”

The only way you are going to get them to want to do it is by getting them to see how your product or service will be the solution to their problems.

I will be doing a Selling Skills section every week. Part 2 will be on Fab’s. (Features, Advantages, Benefits)

Michael Jackson Died way too Soon. Why did it Happen?

Friday, June 26th, 2009

I was in total awe when I saw Michael Jackson dancing and moonwalking across the stage as he sang his mega hit “Billie Jean”. Michael unleashed the moonwalk to the world on a television special called “Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever” which was a 1983 television special to commemorate Motown’s twenty-fifth year of existence. I was only 8 years old at the time but I was forever changed. I tried to moonwalk whenever the opportunity presented itself. Although my moonwalk was never as slick as Michael’s, people new what I was doing.

I don’t think there will ever be another entertainer who will grab the world the way Michael Jackson did. Michael Jackson sold 750 million records world wide becoming the number one solo artist of his time. His career was truly extraordinary. Michael Jackson seemed to be larger then life. However, there is no one in the world that is larger than life. Michael Jackson’s family feared he overdosed on morphine On 11/29/1993, Michael Jackson canceled his “Dangerous” worldwide tour and went into seclusion after admitting that pain from a burn injury in 1984 as well as allegations of sexual abuse have caused him to become addicted to painkillers. Jackson said that he began using painkillers after reconstructive surgery for the burn he suffered in 1984 while filming a PepsiCola commercial.

Alison Boshoff from www.dailymailuk.com reported last month that Jackson was struggling to make even a handful of the rehearsals for the comeback tour which was scheduled for 2010 at the O2 in London. He had been to just two out of more than 45 rehearsals. Those close to Michael claimed that his long-term addiction to painkillers combined with the considerable pressure of attempting a showbusiness comeback – may just have claimed his life. According to Alison Boshoff’s Jackson family source, he was ‘just not able to pick himself up out of the painkiller stupor’ that he was in.

Lisa Marie Presley wrote in her blog the following:

spacer Michael Jackson Died way too Soon. Why did it Happen?

Years ago Michael and I were having a deep conversation about life in general.

I can’t recall the exact subject matter but he may have been questioning me about the circumstances of my Fathers Death.

At some point he paused, he stared at me very intensely and he stated with an almost calm certainty, “I am afraid that I am going to end up like him, the way he did.”

I promptly tried to deter him from the idea, at which point he just shrugged his shoulders and nodded almost matter of fact as if to let me know, he knew what he knew and that was kind of that.

14 years later   I am sitting here watching on the news an ambulance leaves the driveway of his home, the big gates, the crowds outside the gates, the coverage, the crowds outside the hospital, the Cause of death and what may have led up to it and the memory of this conversation hit me, as did the unstoppable tears.

A predicted ending by him, by loved ones and by me, but what I didn’t predict was how much it was going to hurt when it finally happened.

The person I failed to help is being transferred right now to the LA County Coroners office for his Autopsy.

All of my indifference and detachment that I worked so hard to achieve over the years has just gone into the bowels of hell and right now I am gutted.

I am going to say now what I have never said before because I want the truth out there for once.

Our relationship was not “a sham” as is being reported in the press. It was an unusual relationship yes, where two unusual people who did not live or know a “Normal life” found a connection, perhaps with some suspect timing on his part. Nonetheless, I do believe he loved me as much as he could love anyone and I loved him very much.

I wanted to “save him” I wanted to save him from the inevitable which is what has just happened.

His family and his loved ones also wanted to save him from this as well but didn’t know how and this was 14 years ago. We all worried that this would be the outcome then.

At that time, In trying to save him, I almost lost myself.

He was an incredibly dynamic force and power that was not to be underestimated.

When he used it for something good, It was the best and when he used it for something bad, It was really, REALLY bad.

Mediocrity was not a concept that would even for a second enter Michael Jackson’s being or actions.

I became very ill and emotionally/ spiritually exhausted in my quest to save him from certain self-destructive behavior and from the awful vampires and leeches he would always manage to magnetize around him.

I was in over my head while trying.

I had my children to care for, I had to make a decision.

The hardest decision I have ever had to make, which was to walk away and let his fate have him, even though I desperately loved him and tried to stop or reverse it somehow.

After the Divorce, I spent a few years obsessing about him and what I could have done different, in regret.

Then I spent some angry years at the whole situation.

At some point, I truly became Indifferent, until now.

As I sit here overwhelmed with sadness, reflection and confusion at what was my biggest failure to date, watching on the news almost play by play The exact Scenario I saw happen on August 16th, 1977 happening again right now with Michael (A sight I never wanted to see again) just as he predicted, I am truly, truly gutted.

Any ill experience or words I have felt towards him in the past has just died inside of me along with him.

He was an amazing person and I am lucky to have gotten as close to him as I did and to have had the many experiences and years that we had together.

I desperately hope that he can be relieved from his pain, pressure and turmoil now.

He deserves to be free from all of that and I hope he is in a better place or will be.

I also hope that anyone else who feels they have failed to help him can be set free because he hopefully finally is.

The World is in shock but somehow he knew exactly how his fate would be played out some day more than anyone else knew, and he was right.

I really needed to say this right now, thanks for listening.

~LMP

Millions of people are addicted to painkillers worldwide. Prescription drug addiction is a growing problem. According to the Office of National Drug Policy, emergency room visits resulting from the abuse of painkillers alone has gone up 163% since 1995.

I had once been in a painkiller stupor’ myself. Read about my addiction right here at How I Changed my Addictions

Elvis Presley, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Marilyn Monroe, and now Michael Jackson have shown the world that no one is larger than life. Imagine the lives these individuals could have led if they were to live drug free? It is time we pay attention to the crisis that is the secretly hidden pain killer addictions of millions of people. Just because it comes from a doctor doesn’t make pain killer use okay. Just because it is found in your families medicine cabinet doesn’t make it okay. It is time we pay extra attention to our family members pain killer addictions. If you know someone who is suffering from this horrible addiction, please get them help. If you don’t know where to turn, you can try Narcotics Anonymous or email me and I will guide you to the right source. I have been pain killer free for almost five years. I can tell you that it wasn’t easy, but I did it. If I did it, anyone can do it.

I would like everyone to keep the Jackson family in their hearts and prayers. It is not their fault that they didn’t get him help. No one can get help for someone if that person does not want help. I hope they have the strength in the future to talk about this problem to people who are suffering from this addiction so they cannot make the mistake that their beloved Michael made.

Mental Toughness is Critical to Your Success. These Two Steps Will Make you Mentally Tough

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Mental toughness is one of the characteristic traits that are essential to being successful in life. Are you mentally tough as nails or are you frail as tin foil? Do you get excited about challenges or do you get scared whenever a challenge arises? Do you doubt yourself and everything that you try to achieve? If you are not mentally tough then you need to work on your mind power.

Buddha said, “The mind is everything. What you think you become.” You become mentally tough by controlling your thoughts. The more you practice thought control, the more in control of your thoughts you will be. Practicing thought control to focus on empowering thoughts will truly change your life. Power and control over your thoughts and actions will have you achieving the greatest outcomes of your life.

Charles Haanel said, “The difference between men is mental. Your mind must be a creative force to give you an edge.” Everyone is created equal, everyone has the power inside of them to achieve greatness. The question is, are your thoughts empowering you mentally or are your thoughts demoralizing you mentally? Do you believe you can achieve anything you desire? Or do you fear failure on a regular basis? If you fear failure than it is imperative that you work on your thought quality. You must be using your mental toughness to give you a competitive edge or else you are missing out on an incredible opportunity to achieve greatness.

In my opinion, the two easiest ways to work on your mental toughness is to work on the following two steps.

1. You must have total control over your thoughts and actions. You must believe you can achieve anything you believe. You must strictly focus on empowering thoughts. If you find a negative thought entering your head, get rid of it as if it was a terrible virus. The quality of your life is going to be determined by the quality of your thoughts. The more empowered your thoughts, the more empowered you will be.

2. You must realize that there is no such thing as failure. Failure is only a result. If you don’t get the result that you desire you must change your approach until you succeed. If you are trying to achieve success, your desire to succeed must be greater that your fear of failure. Henry Ford said, “Win or learn, there is no failure.” Fredrick Douglass said, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” Once you learn how to deal with failure the same way that some of the greatest achievers of all time had, success will be in your very near future if you are not already experiencing it.

If you follow the these two steps than your mental toughness will get stronger by the day. Those who fear rejection will experience it. Those who believe in success will experience success. Your life will follow your dominant mental thoughts.

Communication Skills are Critical to Your Success

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Communication is the key to Your Life

The quality of your communication with yourself and with others is going to determine the quality of your life. The greatest achievers of all time have been masters of communication. Are you getting the best out of your communication?

Quality communication will get you the best out of your life, but its up to you to get the best out of your communication.

How to Win Friends and Influence People

Whether your communicating with your family and friends, your business associates, or complete strangers, it is very important to make the person you are communicating with feel special and important. Make sure the people you are communicating with find you sincere. The worst thing that you can do is make them feel like you are just trying to manipulate them.

Dale Carnegie said, “YOU CAN MAKE MORE FRIENDS IN TWO MONTHS BY BECOMING GENUINELY INTERESTED IN OTHER PEOPLE THAN YOU CAN IN TWO YEARS BY TRYING TO GET OTHER PEOPLE INTERESTED IN YOU.”

Dale Carnegie was one of the greatest communicators of all time. His book “How to Win Friends & Influence People” is the best selling book of all time after the bible. It is one of my favorite books. I have read it at least five times and I constantly listen to the audio book. Every time I read it I learn something new. If you don’t have it, get it immediately.

Here are some of my favorite Dale Carnegie quotes from the book “How to Win Friends & Influence People”.

“ONE CAN WIN THE ATTENTION AND TIME AND COOPERATION OF EVEN THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER PEOPLE BY BECOMING GENUINELY INTERESTED IN THEM.”

“GIVE HONEST, SINCERE APPRECIATION. BE HEARTY IN YOUR APPROBATION AND LAVISH IN YOUR PRAISE, AND PEOPLE WILL CHERISH YOUR WORDS AND TREASURE THEM AND REPEAT THEM OVER A LIFETIME. THEY WILL REPEAT THEM YEARS AFTER YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN THEM.”

“IF WE WANT TO MAKE FRIENDS, LETS PUT OURSELVES OUT TO DO THINGS FOR OTHER PEOPLE. THINGS THAT REQUIRE TIME, ENERGY, UNSELFISHNESS AND THOUGHTFULNESS.”

“NEVER FORGET THAT TO BE GENUINELY INTERESTED IN OTHER PEOPLE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT QUALITY FOR A SALESPERSON TO POSSESS OR FOR ANY PERSON IN THAT MATTER.”

“WE MUST HAVE A DEEP AND ABIDING DESIRE TO COMMUNICATE OUR CONVICTIONS AND TRANSFER OUR FEELINGS TO OUR LISTENERS.”

I don’t care if you are a CEO, a coach, a sales professional, a teacher, a politician, a parent, a business owner, or someone who is trying to meet their soul mate, the quality of your communication is going to determine the quality of your success. You cannot be successful at what you do if you are not a successful communicator. If Barack Obama was not a master of communications, he would not be the president of the United States of America.

If communications is one of your weaknesses, work on your communication skills until they become one of your strengths. Mastering your communication skills will make you an unstoppable force of power.

Remember, it is not the length of your life that matters, it is the way you live it. Never let them forget your name. You must stay on their minds. In todays competitive world, only the first choice gets paid.

Take Your Idea From a Thought to a Profit

Friday, June 12th, 2009

A Groundbreaking Idea Worth Billions

Have you ever had an idea for something new and innovative that you knew without a doubt that it was guaranteed to be a success? You visualized this idea in your head over a million times to the point where you knew everything there was to know about it forward and backwards? You even kept it a secret from everyone because you didn’t want anyone to steal your idea. You were just about to put your plan into action for your incredible idea and then suddenly you realize that someone beat you to the finish line? Has this ever happened to you? Don’t feel bad because I can assure you that this has happened to people all over the world countless times. I can also assure you that many of these ideas that people failed to take action on eventually ended up changing the world, making their owners millions, if not billions. Do you have a story like this where you should’ve, could’ve, would’ve?

What was the Difference Between you and Them?

Why was someone able to pull it off and not you? I can tell you why, that someone took the necessary actions to manifest their idea while you just sat around and let the idea occupy space in your head. Taking action is the foundational key to achieving any success. You can’t achieve any kind of success unless you take massive action towards its manifestation.

What are you Afraid of?

Walt Disney said, “All of your dreams can come true if you have the courage to pursue them.” What do you think some of the reasons were that prevented people from taking action on some of these awesome ideas? Its usually fear of failure. Most people don’t believe in their abilities to achieve extraordinary outcomes so they won’t even give it a try. If you are going to go through life and not even try to make your dreams come true then there really is no sense for you to live because what you are doing is just existing.

The greatest risk is the one that you don’t take. Nothing is more expensive than a missed opportunity. As I like to tell my clients, “Opportunity doesn’t go away, it just goes to someone else. Ask any successful businessperson and they will tell you, the secret to success in life is to be ready for opportunities when they present themselves. They will also tell you that opportunities usually come disguised in the shape of hard work and difficulty. So if they don’t appear to be on a silver platter, don’t get discouraged. You must have vision, determination, and a burning desire to succeed no matter what happens along the way. You must be committed to achieving the results that you desire no matter how many times you fail. You must stay flexible in your approach to achieving. If you don’t get the results that you desire, you must change your approach until you succeed.

Fear of criticism holds back many others who are terrified what others might think of their idea. They are usually terrified what their friends or family might think of them.

Great ideas often receive criticism and incredible opposition from mediocre minds. When Walt Disney was developing Disneyland, most of the people he talked to thought that it would be a financial disaster which would be closed and forgotten within a year. Imagine if Walt Disney would have listened to those dream stealers, he would have never blessed the world with the amazing multi billion dollar brand known as Disney. Remember, it is not what others believe you can achieve, it only matters what you believe you can achieve.

The Greater the Idea, the More Difficult it Will be to Achieve Success.

When Thomas Edison was attempting to invent electricity, he was competing against some of the sharpest inventing minds in the world. It was a race to invent electricity, an invention that would change the world. Can you imagine the difficulties that these inventors were facing? They were guaranteed to meet failure along the way. Thomas Edison tested over 3,000 filaments before he came up with his version of a practical light bulb. Can you imagine how many people would have quit after trying 500 different kinds of filaments with no success? How many people would have quit after 2,000 different failures? No one would have said that they didn’t give it a valiant effort. However, Thomas Edison was a different kind of achiever. He would never quit until he achieved the results that he desired, no matter how many failures he experienced. Thomas Edison said, “Results? Why, man, I have gotten lots of results! If I find 10,000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is often a step forward.” Thomas Edison believed that many of life’s failures were experienced by people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.

You can Achieve Anything you Desire.

If you are trying to achieve something in life, you must stay committed to your desired outcomes. You must believe in your abilities to achieve the results that you desire. Failure should not be an option for you. Success must be your only option. You must keep on keeping on until you succeed. No one has ever achieved greatness without experiencing failure. It is a part of the success process. Everyone is created equal. What separates the achievers from the nonbelievers is the quality of their hearts and minds. You can achieve anything you desire if you believe in your abilities to achieve. You are what you think. With your thoughts you design your world. The question is, are you going to design your dream life, or are you going to design a life of mediocrity? It all depends on which one you want for yourself. I want an extraordinary life and I know you do too. Get infected with passion, because nothing extraordinary in the world has been accomplished without passion. Go after it with the fierce urgency of now. Don’t say you will do it one day, achieve it today. Don’t wait to be great, be great now. I know you can. Do you believe you can?

Marketing Like the Masters. Its so Easy a Cave Man Could do it

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Marketing has Never Been so Important

Marketing has never been more important as it is today. Yet so many businesses will fail to market themselves successfully because they don’t understand effective marketing strategies. They might as well eat their marketing dollars because at least they will not starve from not having any business.

Marketing is all about the strategic positioning of your brand. If you haven’t marketed properly, the consumer will not buy your products or services that you sell because they will be buying from your competition who has marketed effectively. They will be doing business with the brands that have created an identity that stands out in their minds. You must create an identity for your brand that stands out from your competition. You must make your marketing so effective that consumers only think of your brand when they think of buying the goods or services that you offer. You must market like Geico does.

Success Leaves Clues

Success leaves so many clues for you to follow that you can market like the best of them. There are so many companies that you can learn effective branding and marketing from. Companies like Apple, Nike, Priceline.com, and one of my personal favorite marketers, Geico. Geico Insurance has got marketing down to a science. With over 9 million clients, they are the fastest growing major insurance company.

During a 2000 creative session, they came up with the Geico Gecko because people would mispronounce Geico all the time with Gecko. Their marketing minds had learned that successful ad campaigns from the past have proven animals create a strong connection between customers and companies. So they came up with that lovable Geico Gecko and the rest is advertisement history. In 2005, the Geico Gecko won an award for America’s favorite ad icon in America. According to the Geico Gecko, “My job is saving people money, I love my job.” Talk about effective marketing, who doesn’t want to save money on their insurance? Whether you like the Gecko or not, you know the Geico Gecko and I am sure you have your favorite Geico Gecko commercial.

So Easy a Cave Man can do it

In 2004, Geico went on to introduce their online insurance website. That is when they introduced to the world their slogan “Geico online, so easy a cave man can do it.” Now everyone in the world are familiar with those hairy disco dancing cave men.

There is so much small businesses can learn from the billion dollar companies that are spending millions on their marketing campaigns. Study the best of the best so you can implement them into your own marketing campaign. You don’t have to spend millions on your marketing to make it effective. You just have to position your marketing to stand out in your clients eyes. Remember, it is so easy a cave man can do it.
