Overcome Your Fears by Facing them Head on

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

John F. Kennedy said, “The only thing that we have to fear is fear itself.” A friend of mine once told me that fear stands for forget everything and run. I thought what he said was very funny. Unfortunately, many people do exactly that, they avoid their fears. People have different fears. Some people are scared to fly in airplanes, some people are afraid to open up their own business, while others might be afraid to swim. The bottom line is people all over the world have fears.

I have always been afraid of roller coasters and thrill rides. I have no idea how it started but since my youth, I have been terrified of these thrill rides. When I was in high school, my friends and I would go to Walt Disney World. My friends would make fun of me because I would be screaming on rides like Thunder Mountain and Space Mountain. I would never go to Busch Gardens with them because they had all the big roller coasters there. My friends wanted to see me scared so bad that they would offer to pay my way if I went with them. Space Mountain was the biggest coaster I had ever been on. I know you thrill park maniacs are laughing right now because Space Mountain is considered very tame compared to all of the new thrill rides of today. I have always wanted to ride them but for some strange reason I was just scared to death.

When I started to listen to motivational speakers about eleven years ago, they would talk about overcoming your fears. Listening to this wisdom helped me over the years in the business world. I would never be afraid to take on risks in the business world. This made me very successful at whatever I chose to do. I loved challenges, no matter how big they were. Challenges always got me very excited, they would motivate me to achieve, no matter how difficult the task ahead of me was. Humans have an awesome ability to overcome challenges and adversity. People have been known to do incredible things when they were in danger. We have an amazing ability to achieve. That is how we are programed. Many of us can get in our own way of our achievements because we are scared of the outcomes. That makes us our own worst enemies. So many people are afraid to take risks.

How do we Overcome this?

The only way to overcome our fears is by facing them head on. We have to build up the courage and just do it. Ever since 1994 when Disney open its attraction the “Tower of Terror” and I always told myself I wouldn’t ride that if you paid me 100,000 dollars. I honestly thought that my heart would stop. This is the free fall simulation ride that drops you from a 13 story free fall then pulls you back up only to drop you again. The total ride is anywhere from 3-5 drops depending on a random computer sequence that gives you a different experience every time you ride it. I wouldn’t ever consider this ride before I started my career as a motivational speaker. However, I don’t like to tell my readers to do something unless I would do it myself. I knew that my fear of thrill rides was just a matter of mind over matter.

I got to Disney Hollywood Studios where the ride is located, where it stands at 199 feet tall. Just looking at the building was enough to scare me, but I knew what I was there for, I was there to overcome my fear of thrill rides. I was no longer going to be scared because I was going to overcome my fears. I walked around a little bit and tried to avoid it, but I knew I had to do it. I wasn’t ever going to back down from a thrill ride again. I got in line and there I was, at the point of no return. I couldn’t believe I was going to ride the “Tower of Terror”. I was going to ride something that I had been terrified of for the last fourteen years. I got strapped in and there was this calm that came over me because I knew I was achieving something. It wasn’t long before we got going. Up and down and up and down, it was so intense I couldn’t believe it. It dropped so fast that I would rise off my seat, then it would pull you back up to drop you again. When the ride was over, I felt awesome. I knew I had done something that I always thought I would never do. I couldn’t believe how much fun it was. Now I am looking to try every thrill ride in town with an enthusiasm I thought was impossible for me. I felt so awesome all day knowing I had overcome my biggest fear. Was I scared, you bet I was scared. When we get scared our body gives us the courage to handle it, we just have to have the faith in ourselves.

I am encouraging you to face your fears head on. You are not on earth for a long time, you are here for a good time, so just do it. Really consider the words “The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself.” It was so rewarding for me to overcome my fear. I want everyone to feel that feeling. You really can achieve anything you want, if you just want it bad enough. Do something you have always been afraid to do but face it with the mindset that you are not afraid. It will help you overcome any obstacle in your life.

Want To Change Your Life? Take A Good Look At Your Life To See What Is Missing?

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Have you taken a real good look at your life lately? Are you where you want to be in your career? Are you in the relationship that you have always dreamed of? Are you happy with the way you are living? With the new year just days away, it is the perfect time to take a good deep look at your life. Make sure you are totally honest with yourself when you do. If you are not living the life of your dreams, don’t make excuses on why you failing, make a commitment to change. Make a dedicated commitment to change your life so you can start living the way you have always dreamed of. It is never too late for anyone to achieve their dreams. I don’t care how many times you have failed up to now. I don’t care how many people have told you that you would never make it. What I care about is the way that you see your future. What I care about is your mindset. Do you believe in yourself, or is your limiting beliefs stopping you from being successful? Now is the time to reset your mind to believe that you can do achieve anything you desire. Take control of your future by focusing on the most empowering thoughts. Your thoughts will shape your life. With empowering thoughts, you can achieve anything you desire. If your thoughts are negative, your life will be negative and you will fail repeatedly. In 2009, I want you to never let a negative thought enter your head again. Change your future by changing you first. Take control of your life now. Make a commitment to yourself that you will strive for constant and never ending improvement. Make a commitment to yourself that you are going to stay focused on the great outcomes of your future. Make a commitment to yourself that you are going to take the necessary actions everyday until you make your dreams come true. Make a commitment to yourself that you are never going to give up until you get the results you desire. There is no difference between the abilities of human beings, we are all created equal. What separates the achievers from the rest of the world is that they didn’t give up when they failed, they stayed flexible in their approaches until they achieved their goals. They stayed committed to their cause, when the weak just couldn’t handle the failure. The achievers focused on their future, while the others couldn’t let go of the past. You have a new year coming up, take a good look at yourself. What changes will you have to make to make your dreams come true? What is missing that is keeping you from being successful? What could you do different to get the results that you desire? Are you going to make your dreams come true, or are you going to live with the regret that you didn’t give your life the effort that your life needed? Now is the time to make the changes that are holding you back. Now is the time for you to make it happen. Keep your eyes on the prize and make sure you give it everything you got. Remember, Henry Ford said, “Whether you believe you can, or whether you believe you can’t you are right.”

6 Steps To Making Good Decisions

Make Only The Best Decisions

Wouldn’t you like to make the best decisions all the time? The quality of your life will depend on your ability to make the right decisions at the right times. How do you make all the right decisions, 100% of the time? You can’t do that, its impossible to make the right decisions 100% of the time. What you can do is become a master at the art of decision making so you will make more right decisions than wrong ones. Research has shown that highly successful people usually make their decisions quick and they are reluctant to change their minds once they have made their decisions. The opposite side is the people who regularly fail. These people normally take a long time to make a decision and are frequently changing their minds.

Why are successful people so good at making decisions? Successful people make good decisions because they don’t make situations more complicated than they really are. They have faith in their abilities to achieve. They focus on the most important factors of their situation. This focus on the most important factor usually gives them great results when making decisions, They break their big decisions down into mini-decisions. This gives them an opportunity to turn the big decisions into several smaller decisions. They visualize all the good outcomes their decision can bring, instead of focusing on all the negative outcomes that are possible. The bottom-line is that good decisions come from disciplined thinking and experience. The more decisions you make, the better you will get at making the right decisions. Don’t be afraid to make decisions, look at them as an opportunity to shine. Remember the greatest risk is the one you don’t take, so don’t be afraid of making the wrong decision. Get excited about making the right decision.

Steps To Making Great Decisions

1. Focus on the most important factor of your decision. In almost all decisions, there is usually one really important factor to the decision. Focus your efforts on that important detail and your choice will become so much easier to make.

2. Make big decisions into several smaller decisions. When a decision looks like too much to handle, break that big decision into several small decisions. After you make all the smaller decisions, the big decision will be made for you.

3. Take into consideration all the good outcomes that will come out of you making your decision. Decision makers get inspired by the positive outcomes that their decision will bring them. The excitement from the outcomes of your decision will keep your focus where it needs to be. Don’t focus on the negative possibilities of your decision.

4. Take the necessary actions required to make your decision a success. Don’t decide to do something and then fail to take the action required to make it happen. Focus your efforts on making your decision successful. Don’t talk about making it happen, take massive action to make it happen.

5. Keep your decision making process as simple as possible. This is a habit so many people are guilty of. You don’t want to get paralysis by over analysis. KEEP IT SIMPLE SILLY (KISS). Some decision makers put so many scenarios out there that they confuse themselves. Only focus on the scenarios that you have to do right to make your decision a success.

6. Consider all of your options. Don’t be a know it all. Good decision makers are not too proud to consult with someone else. Consult with people who have more experience about the subject than you do. Ask them what they would consider if they were in the same situation? Their knowledge and insight will show you different perspectives and different options that may completely change what you were thinking. Don’t get crazy and get 30 different opinions because you will probably put yourself in a position of indecision, which will probably lead you down the wrong path.

Follow these steps and over time you will master the art of decision making.

Accomplishing Goals Daily. How Easy Is It Really?

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

What action could you take today, that would get you closer to achieving your desired goals? When we have a dream in our lives that we are chasing, it is imperative that every moment of our business day is used towards getting the results that we desire. Remember, when it comes to work, you must work as hard as you can. When it comes to play, you must play hard. When it comes time to rest, get plenty of rest so that you will be energized. Then it starts all over with a new day, new start. However, make sure that your business day is strategically thought out ahead of time. I use a note card that has my daily goals from the most important goal I desire to achieve, to the least important goal I desire to achieve. Getting your toughest goals accomplished first will inspire you and give you momentum for the rest of your goals. Don’t schedule anything in your work day unless it is going to get you closer to your hopes, goals, dreams, and desires. Life is to short to waste time. Nothing big is going to come easy to you. The greatest achievements of all time always required blood, sweat, and tears. Did I mention hard work? Yes, and plenty of hard work. So when you wake up in the morning tomorrow. Look at your goals for the day and start knocking them out, one by one. Don’t waste any of your precious time towards anything else. Always ask yourself this question everyday, “What actions can I take today that are going to get me closer to making my dreams come true?

Friday, December 19th, 2008

Remains identified as missing toddler Caylee Anthony.  Check out complete coverage from this Orlando Sentinel News report at the link below.

Orlando Sentinel breaking news

America needed closure on this case. I had been following this case as close as I could. Having two small children and being a single parent who lives in Orlando, I just got so wrapped up in this case. I volunteered on the search one day with Texas EqueeSearch to look for little Caylee. It was amazing to see that day, all walks of life come together to help bring Caylee home. I am so relieved that we are now moving into the penalty phase of this case. I know that justice will prevail and the people who did this to this precious little girl, will pay, I am asking you to say a little prayer for Caylee. May she rest in a better place.

Choosing How We Respond To The Events In Our Lives Can Make A Difference Between Life And Death

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

We all have heard the compelling stories of greatness, where people have stretched their abilities to achieve success at levels that were way beyond their current abilities. The human mind is so powerful, it is amazing what we can achieve when our thoughts and actions are in the right state of mind. We have to condition our thoughts to constantly focus on always getting better and better. We can never control the cards we are dealt in life. What we can control, is how we play with those cards. What happens if we are not in the right state of mind?

In the summer of 2007, I was not in the right state of mind. I was depressed, I wasn’t happy with the way my life was going. I had been labeled a racist by people who didn’t know me. This led me to be banned by the NBA. For those of you who don’t know the story please check out this Orlando Sentinel story at http://hoomancan.com/blog/?p=42. I just wasn’t happy with anything in my life. I was asking all the negative why me questions. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks. The only person who could get my life back together was me. I realized that if I wanted things to change, then I had to change immediately. It was my life’s defining moment. Was I going to respond to the situation, or was I going to react to the situation?

Whether you choose to respond to the events in your life, or whether you choose to react to the events in your life, the difference in outcomes can be a matter of life and death. I chose to respond to the greatest negative in my life, by turning it into the biggest positive in my life. I am now living the life I have always dreamed of as a motivational speaker. The fact that I am making such a huge difference in people’s lives is making me feel so incredible, I just can’t tell you how amazing it feels. My dreams have come true because I have helped other people to make their dreams come true. I am so grateful that I chose to get back up after life had dealt me its hardest blow. Sure it hurt, it hurt real bad, but it made me so much stronger that I now feel like I can face anything that life throws at me.

Some people haven’t been as fortunate as me, because they have chose to react to their situations. They have chose to end their lives. It seems like another athlete has reacted to the challenges of life by choosing to go the route of murder suicide. Athlete Justin Levens and his wife were found dead by gunshot wounds in their Laguna Niguel, CA condo earlier today. Please check out this TMZ.com story

 http://www.tmz.com/2008/12/18/mma-fighter-and-wife-found-shot-to-death/

Suicide is the worst thing you can possibly do because it just destroys the people that you leave behind. Did I think of suicide? Sure I did, for a second. Then I thought what would happen to my son, my daughter, my family, my friends. It is the most selfish thing you can do. History has proven that anyone can overcome the greatest of challenges as long as they believe and they never lose hope. Please, I am asking you to look out after the people in your lives. If you know they are having a tough time, keep close to them. Help them in anyway that you can. Suicide will never solve anything. We need to look out for our friends and families. We can make a difference in other people’s lives if we just care enough. Justin 28 and his wife Sarah 25, were young, they could have made it if they knew that there was hope. I ask you to look out for people who may be depressed, do everything you can to help them believe in the future. Anyone can change, they just have to believe. If you are thinking of suicide, please email me at hooman@hoomancan.com. I will tell you my story in detail, we will overcome your problems. Don’t become another statistic. If I changed my life completely, so can you.
